Short answer: choose a scent diffuser by the size of the room you spend most time in. Up to about 20 m², reed sticks or a small ultrasonic diffuser are enough. For 20 to 100 m², such as a living room or open-plan kitchen, a waterless (cold-air) diffuser with adjustable intensity works best. If your home is larger than 100 m², or you want to scent more than one floor, use two devices. The Pure One aroma diffuser is suitable for rooms up to approximately 100 m², with six intensity levels and a 1, 4 or 8-hour timer.

Which scent diffuser suits how many m²?

First measure the room where you want to notice the fragrance. A room of 5 by 6 metres is 30 m². Count an open kitchen or dining area as part of the living room when there is no door between them. The table gives a starting point; walls, ceiling height and ventilation decide how far scent travels in your home.

Room Floor area (indicative) Suitable type Starting level on the Pure One Number of devices
Bedroom or study 10–15 m² Reed sticks, or a small ultrasonic or waterless diffuser on a low setting Level 1, short timer 1
Living room 25–40 m² Waterless diffuser Level 2 to 3 1
Open-plan kitchen and living area 40–70 m² Waterless diffuser, placed centrally Level 3 to 4 1
Whole ground floor 70–100 m² Waterless diffuser with high coverage Level 4 to 6 1
Larger than 100 m² or several floors 100 m² and more Two waterless diffusers, one per zone Level 2 to 4 per zone 2 or more

Always start one level lower than you think you need and increase it after a day. Your nose gets used to a fragrance quickly; someone walking in notices more than someone who has been in the room for an hour.

Choose in three questions

  1. Where do you spend most of your time? Measure that room, not the whole house. One diffuser in the living room that you switch on in the evening does more than three devices in rooms you rarely use.
  2. Open or closed? An open layout calls for one stronger device in a central spot. Separate rooms with closed doors are better served by one device per room.
  3. When do you want to notice it? If you want to come home to a fragrant hallway or wake up to a fresh bedroom, choose a device with a timer. The Pure One switches off automatically after 1, 4 or 8 hours.

Picture the moment: you come in, put down your keys and the living room smells softly of warm wood or fresh citrus, without anyone lighting a candle. That moment is what you are choosing; the floor area only decides which device can deliver it.

What does a scent diffuser cost to run?

The purchase price says little; refills decide what you pay over time. One 120 ml bottle of fragrance oil for the Pure One lasts 2 to 4 months, depending on the level, the timer and the room. A gift set with three bottles therefore covers roughly 6 to 12 months of use. How long a bottle lasts in practice is explained in how long does diffuser oil last.

By comparison, reed sticks and scented candles cost less per item, but you replace them more often and you cannot adjust their strength. In rooms above 30 m² they often do not reach far enough.

Placement in a large room

In a large or open room, the spot matters more than the level. Place the diffuser centrally on a stable, dry surface, not in a corner and not right next to a window, cooker hood or air purifier. Moving air carries fragrance; work with that airflow instead of against it. More guidance is in the placement guide and in how many diffusers do you need.

Use fragrance oil as instructed, air the room now and then, and take housemates, children and pets into account. Read more in is a waterless diffuser safe for kids and pets.

Choose your starting point

If you are just starting, choose the matte black gift set: the diffuser with three 120 ml hotel fragrance oils, so you can vary by room or season. If you already know which fragrance you want, the Pure One aroma diffuser on its own is enough. You control it with the remote or on the device itself. All devices for larger rooms are together in the diffusers for large rooms collection.

Frequently asked questions

Which scent diffuser is suitable for 100 m²?

For 100 m² you need a waterless diffuser with high coverage, such as the Pure One, which is suitable for rooms up to approximately 100 m². Place it centrally and start on a middle level. With many walls or several floors, a second device works better than one device on the highest level.

My home is 150 or 220 m². What now?

Divide the house into zones and give each zone you actually use its own device. For 150 m² that usually means two diffusers, for example one downstairs and one upstairs. For 220 m², two or three. You do not need to scent every room.

Is there a cordless scent diffuser?

There are small diffusers with a battery, but they usually cover a limited area. The Pure One runs on a power adapter with a USB-C cable and has no battery, so there is nothing to recharge.

What is a professional scent diffuser, and do I need one at home?

A professional scent diffuser is often connected to the ventilation system and is made for hotels, shops and offices of several hundred square metres. At home you rarely need one. A waterless diffuser uses comparable technology to that of hotel lobbies, at the scale of a living room.

Which scent diffuser is best for a small room?

For a toilet, hallway or small bedroom up to about 15 m², reed sticks are enough. If you want to adjust the fragrance or put it on a timer, use a waterless diffuser on its lowest level with a short timer.
